Nottingham Forest invested in excess of €100m in signing over 20 players in the summer window and among the new players to arrive at the City Ground was Remo Freuler.

The Switzerland international joined Steve Cooper’s side after spending over six years at Atalanta and has been a regular for the Tricky Trees.

He has featured 12 times in all competitions this season for Nottingham Forest, which includes 10 starts.

The defensive midfielder is currently with the national team at the World Cup, preparing for the crucial round of 16 clash against Portugal on Tuesday.

Corriere dello Sport interviewed the 30-year-old, discussing Switzerland’s preparation for the upcoming tie and also their campaign so far in the FIFA tournament. The Italian outlet also asked the player about his decision to leave Atalanta for Nottingham Forest.

“It wasn’t an easy decision. In Bergamo, I was at home, I felt part of a family, I still have many friends at Atalanta and off the pitch. But after seven years I felt the need to change. I was born in 1992, I’m not a kid anymore, I thought it was the right time,” he said.

“I’m settling in. It’s not bad, it’s a nice place. Now I’m playing continuously. But obviously I miss Italy, I would be a hypocrite to say otherwise. I also grew up as a man with you.”

The Tricky Trees player was also asked whether Serie A has lost its competitiveness.

The midfielder explained: “I don’t think so. Just look at the Champions League: three out of four teams qualified for the round of 16. In Italy we still play at high levels. I made a weighted choice but maybe others would have preferred another path.”

Freuler admitted there was an opportunity for him to join another club before signing for Nottingham Forest.

He was then asked whether José Mourinho’s AS Roma showed interest in him. Responding to that, Freuler stressed: “There are always transfer rumours. And maybe yes, there was something with them [Roma]. But until you put pen to paper in football there is nothing concrete.”
