Whatever can be said about Vincent Janssen’s time as a Tottenham player, he can’t be accused of a lack of effort.
The 25 year old has always seemed a genuinely nice guy who perhaps found himself a little out of his depth and then had all kinds of other issues to deal with. Never going to be first choice at Spurs, the Dutchman consistently failed to find the back of the net when given a chance.
Sent on loan to Fenerbahce, he had some really bright moments but was held back by a particularly tricky foot injury.
That led to an operation, and he now needs to get back to playing football.
Having signed for CF Monterrey, Janssen has been speaking to De Telegraaf. The Dutch newspaper explain Janssen no longer has an agent, so the Mexican club enlisted the help of a Belgian agency to convince the player to sign for them.
That work had been going on for some time, and in the end he said yes, explaining: “It’s large club, beautiful stadium, very fanatical supporters and a beautiful country with a good climate.
“I am especially relieved that I have been able to choose a club that I fully want. There were quite a few other parties who wanted me, but I thought: is this what I really want? Until Monterrey rang the bell for a month and a half. I have done a lot of research into the competition and have had several discussions with the president. There is a lot of quality in Mexico and the atmosphere in the stadiums is incredible. This is a less well-known football country in Europe, but I don’t care.”
On his struggles at Tottenham, he said: “It was not always easy to deal with a setback.
“The Tottenham chapter did not go the way we all wanted, but I think I would make the same choice if I had another chance.
“In the beginning I missed opportunities that I sometimes think afterwards: if I had used them, things could have turned out differently. Anyway, I’m not going to blame myself for that sort of thing. I have always given one hundred percent.”
Having managed to leave a positive vision of himself as a person for both Tottenham and Fenerbahce fans, there’ll be a lot of people wishing Vincent good luck in Mexico, Sport Witness included.
