Sporting CP’s strongest candidate for presidency is not very happy with the result of Islam Slimani’s transfer to Leicester City.

Madeira Rodrigues, who has been constantly interviewed by the local papers due to his big campaign, claims the Lisbon club haven’t spent their money as they should.

Sporting have recently announced a record profit for the second semester of last year, but that’s still not good enough for the candidate.

CapturarMadeira Rodrigues says the resources weren’t converted to success on the pitch: “This is being sold as an electoral asset, but to explain it, what is happening is that in a year we will be able to toast the money that we received with the sales of Slimani and João Mário.

“Notice the difference of the first [semester] (profit of €64m) to the second (profit of €46m) and then making this analysis we see the brutal increase of the wage bill.

“The two sales are being caught by the investments that were made, by the amount of the salaries, and at this rate we will once again have negative values at the end of the season.”

In 2015/16, Slimani had a wonderful season for Sporting, scoring 31 goals, and that’s what attracted attention from other clubs. He joined Leicester City in a €30m deal, as João Mário left to Inter Milan for €40m.

Slimani hasn’t been capable of repeating that form for Leicester City yet, but his record isn’t that bad. Six goals and four assists in 18 appearances.

It’s also hard to say the Algerian’s replacement hasn’t worked out. Signed from Wolfsburg for only €10m, Bas Dost has scored 20 goals already in his debut season for Sporting.
