‘The wall has crumbled’.
This is how Gazzetta dello Sport describe Fikayo Tomori’s situation at Milan, with the newspaper of the belief his last three performances may have undone all his previous good work in the eyes of the Serie A side.
Loaned from Chelsea in January, the defender took to Italian football like a duck to water, and there was instant success, to the point where it was widely reported the Rossoneri would trigger the €28m purchase clause in his loan deal.
Unfortunately, there are now doubts.
Gazzetta state the last 10 days has seen the Chelsea loanee hand Genoa’s Destro the equaliser in 2-1 win, was at fault for Sassuolo’s victory at San Siro, as well as the recent 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Lazio.
While ‘the errors are always to be distributed among the teammates, especially those of his department’, in this case ‘Tomori is much more responsible than others’.
That’s why Gazzetta ask ‘does it make sense to invest part of the summer budget, a sum of almost €30m, to redeem him from Chelsea?’.
Right now, the ‘yes still prevails’, but there are also ‘many factors to consider’, including where Milan, now 5th in Serie A, end their season.
Finishing in the top four i.e. the Champions League spots ‘is crucial to define Tomori’s future’, although failing to qualify for Europe’s elite competition isn’t something the club are seriously considering right now.
Right now, the Chelsea player’s priority is to ‘put the wall back up’, as doing anything but could see him quickly return to Stamford Bridge and Milan moving on.
