Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic has revealed his idol as a child was Nemanja Vidic, a fact that should cause ears to prick up at Manchester United.
The centre back has become one of the most sought after young defenders in Europe over the past two years, with a series of impressive performances for La Viola catching the eye.
Several of Europe’s biggest sides are all thought to be keen on the centre back, chief among them Manchester United, who have been linked for well over 18 months.
They are believed to be on the hunt for a partner for Harry Maguire this summer, and Milenkovic’s name has been mentioned on more than one occasion.
In fact, rumours linking him with a move have picked up considerably over the last few weeks, and a report this week stated that Manchester United have already been in contact ahead of the summer.
That follows on from claims their efforts are becoming ‘increasingly loud’ and that his club Fiorentina were expecting a proposal to arrive sooner rather than later.
Whether it does remains to be seen, but Milenkovic has given a hint that he’d be keen on the switch, by revealing that United icon Vidic was his idol growing up.
“When I was little, Serbian defender Vidic, who played for Manchester United, was my idol,” he told the club’s official website, relayed by Fiorentina.it.
“He was a very strong defender: I still watch the videos of his highlights today.”
Now, that is by no means a clear come and get me plea to Manchester United, or even an admission he’d like the move, but it has to mean something.
The chance to play for the same club as your idol growing up, in the same position, potentially following in his footsteps and making your own legacy there alongside his? That has to be tempting.
Of course, Manchester United will have to make a move and beat the competition first, which will not be an easy feat, but if they ever needed an incentive to up their efforts, Milenkovic may have just provided it.
