Ahead of the January transfer window, and for a large part of it, the Portuguese press wanted to convince themselves, and everyone reading, that Victor Lindelof was off to Manchester United.
There were claims of deals being agreed and Manchester United being willing to pay well over the defender’s Benfica buyout clause. The Portuguese club’s president was said to have travelled to England for talks on more than one occasion and it very much seemed like it was Benfica doing the pushing.
Wanting to raise funds in the winter window, Lindelof was pinpointed as a possible sale, but Manchester United weren’t as keen as Benfica wanted them to be and everything died down. Benfica in the end managed to raise the money they wanted from others sales.
Swedish newspaper Expressen has been speaking to John Guidetti, the former Manchester City striker who now plays for Celta Vigo. Guidetti is close friends with his compatriot and Expressen asked his opinion on the on/off transfer, given the striker’s Manchester City past.
Guidetti made it clear he just wants what his friends wants: “I wanted it to be what he wanted. Had he wished to go to United I would also want it to be.”
The close of the winter transfer window hasn’t brought an end to the rumours, and it’s pretty clear Lindelof will be linked to Manchester United repeatedly between now and the summer.
