Months after the commotion made by the Portuguese press, Benfica defender Victor Lindelof has finally had his say on a potential transfer to Manchester United.

The player is currently with the Swedish national squad and spoke to local newspaper Expressen about all the speculation which has surrounded him since December.

Regarding his new Benfica contract, Lindelof told Expressen he signed it because “he felt good”.

“I enjoy the club and feel I evolve every day. It was an easy choice. Both parties were very happy, and then they want to give me a sign that they are satisfied with what I’ve done there.”

On the speculation, he said: “Much has been written but it’s nothing I have focused on. I have always focused on what was important to me and it’s the club. There is no difference for me”.

Then he was asked if a transfer to Manchester United next summer is still a possibility: “Let’s take it then. I have a long contract at Benfica and thrive there. It’s a big club and I develop every day. I’m only 22 years old and there is no stress.”

Lindelof was also spotted signing a Manchester United shirt when the subject was still hot, but he claims the picture didn’t show the true situation: “I signed all the shirts. There were all kinds of teams and different shirts.

“I was not thinking about it. It was quite a long queue there but I heard there was a little commotion. But it was just a fun thing.”

Lindelof’s new contract with Benfica now runs until 2021. His release clause was raised from €30m to €60m, which is surely an amount Manchester United wouldn’t go to.
