Ajax made a major mistake not selling Brian Brobbey to West Ham United in the January transfer window, as they’re unlikely to get much for him in future.
That’s according to Johan Derksen, via Voetbal Zone, who believes the Dutch side missed a trick in not pushing that transfer through.
Brobbey has had a difficult campaign with Ajax this season, with the weekend seeing him pulled off after an hour against Groningen after failing to find the back of the net.
The 23-year-old has only managed seven goals and six assists in 43 games in all competitions this year, a far cry from the 22 goals and 11 assists in he managed in the same number of games across last season.
He’s found himself facing criticism once again, with few convinced he was worth the €16.35m paid to bring him back from RB Leipzig in July 2022.
Brobbey had been linked with a move to West Ham in the January transfer window, with them reportedly keen on a deal late in the window. Reports in the Netherland even explained that Brobbey had travelled to London for talks over a potential switch to the London Stadium.
That deal never happened, though, and Derksen believes that Ajax will regret not pushing it through.
“Brobbey is finished,” he said.
“Brobbey is useless. A striker who doesn’t score is useless. It’s structurally like that. Brobbey failed in Germany, came back to Ajax and didn’t achieve anything.
“They could have sold him to a club in England (West Ham) at some point. They should have done that straight away, because you don’t get anything for him anymore.”
