Edinson Cavani hasn’t hidden his dissatisfaction with the current international break situation, since Manchester United and other Premier League clubs won’t let most players join South American sides.
Now even though it seemed like the striker was very keen on playing for Uruguay in the next round of the World Cup qualifiers, the news from his country says it’s their federation who decided not to call him up.
Speaking to Sport 890, an official from the Uruguayan FA explained that it was their decision to keep the player in England.
“The decision for Cavani not to come was born from a call from the coaching staff to the president and there together they decided that the best thing was for him not to come,” said Jorge Casales (via Martin Charquero).
“The decision on Cavani was made between Saturday and Sunday morning.”
In several topics, they explain that Cavani had a longer period of vacation than his teammates. That means he didn’t have pre-season and was only able to play for a few minutes at the weekend.
So Cavani wouldn’t even be ready to start for Uruguay later this week, let alone in a quick sequence of three matches. Then when returning to England, he’d need to quarantine, probably lose his form again, and have that loop until the next call up.
That’s why Tabarez spoke to the player and took that decision.
