Italy’s Tuttomercatoweb are running an exclusive on Thursday afternoon claiming there’s been an update in the ‘past few hours’ on Memphis Depay potentially leaving Manchester United in January.

Christian Guintoli, Napoli’s sport director, is said to have initiated contact with Memphis Depay (although it’s surely more likely to be his representatives) about a January switch. Napoli are short upfront after the injury to Arkadiusz Milik, and have been linked to several options.

It’s explained the Manchester United player would want assurances on game time if he’s to make the move to Napoli. That would make some sense, there’s no point swapping being a bit part player at Manchester United for doing the same at Napoli.

That situation may mean Napoli would have to move players out if they want to sign Depay, with there being no indication whether it would be a loan or permanent move.

Any potential deal surely rests on the final word of Jose Mourinho, who will assess his options in January before sanctioning any moves.
