Earlier on Monday, we covered the latest on Manchester United’s reported chase to sign Antony from Ajax.
Much like Lisandro Martinez, the forward has been a target for Erik ten Hag since he arrived at Old Trafford, with various claims made over the weeks.
Unlike the Argentine, however, Ajax have yet to accept a bid from Manchester United, and De Telegraaf’s Valentijn Driessen is urging the Brazilian to not follow in his former teammate’s footsteps.
He said, relayed by Soccer News: “At Ajax, they have more to offer the Brazilian than at United, who, despite the presence of Ten Hag, are all over the place. With a view to the World Cup, it would very unwise for Antony to go.”
Martinez, down his end, has endured a difficult start to life at Manchester United, most recently hooked at half-time during the 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Brentford.
Panned for his performance at the weekend, there is a feeling the move might have been unwise for the Argentina international.
Driessen added: “It can cost him starting for Argentina at the World Cup. The physically strongest Eredivisie player who is now overrun in the Premier League as a central defender. Why would the club management trust the manager with millions if he drops his top signing after a game and a half?”
We’ll have to wait and see if the decision to take off Martinez against Brentford will cost the player the upcoming clash against Liverpool, but what is clear is that Manchester United aren’t in a good spell, and perhaps it might be best for Antony to avoid joining such a mess a few months away from the World Cup.
