Cristiano Ronaldo has been doing his thing since joining Manchester United from Juventus, and that is putting the football in the back of the net.
The 36-year-old has showed no signs of moving into semi-retirement and has instead plumped for the huge pressure and focus of the Premier League to see out this stage of his career.
Swatting aside claims that he’s somehow finished at the top level, Ronaldo has scored nine goals and added an assist in 11 games for Manchester United. None of those have been penalties, making the statistics even more impressive.
He’ll always split opinion, with some believing praising Ronaldo is in some way a route to doing the opposite with Lionel Messi.
One man who isn’t concerned with any of that is Corriere della Sera editor Mario Sconcerti, who has today thrown huge praise at the Manchester United veteran.
AreaNapoli quote him as saying: “Cristiano Ronaldo is undoubtedly the greatest striker in the history of football. There have been others almost as good as him, but none have been him. This is arithmetic, simple physiology: Ronaldo was something more.
“Ronaldo exists while the number tens disappear. Football today is very physical because the physical part is the only one that can still be improved. The forwards are more and more physical, like Lewandowski, Haaland, Vlahovic. The number tens are becoming fictional midfielders, modern directors in every area of the game.”
Luckily for Manchester United, they have the creativity of Bruno Fernandes, perhaps as the current embodiment of a No.10, alongside the goalscoring ability of Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, if they could just sort out their midfield and defence, they may be heading in the right direction.
