Unai Emery has now made it public and official that he won’t be leaving Villarreal right now for the vacant managerial position at Newcastle United.
Tuesday had seen multiple claims from the English media about the manager moving to the Magpies, and it was even stated he could take a training session with the Premier League club on Thursday.
Some expected he’d be in charge for Newcastle’s match against Brighton & Hove Albion at the weekend, and there was clearly confidence at the club that they’d get their man.
That now doesn’t look like happening, and Emery has taken to social media to explain his stance and insist he’s fully committed to the project at Villarreal, and won’t be going anywhere.
The Spanish manager stated: ‘No matter how much noise there was yesterday in another country, within the club there was transparency and loyalty with the Roig family and with my squad, which is maximum, and for me it is the most important thing. Villarreal CF is my home and I am 100% committed. Honestly, I am grateful for the interest of a great club, but even more grateful to be here and that is why I communicated to Fernando Roig my decision to want to continue being part of this project because of the commitment and respect that I perceive from the club and from my players, which is mutual and reciprocal.
‘I want to thank the fans for the support they have always shown me. On Sunday we have a very important game and I hope that together we can achieve victory. See you at the Estadio de la Cerámica.’
Multiple reports in Spain have explained that whilst Emery was tempted by the prospect of taking over at newcastle United, he wasn’t happy with all the leaks to the media and the subsequent distraction it caused at Villarreal ahead of an important Champions League match.
