Even after all the managers who’ve been linked to the Newcastle United job in recent weeks, it was surprising to see claims today that Unai Emery had now become the ‘favourite’ option for the position.

Reports from Germany claimed the Magpies would like to sign him during the international break, and the club would be keen on paying a ‘huge fee’ to get him from Villarreal.

It turns out the claims were made just before Emery’s press conference in Spain today, and as a result, he was of course asked about this possibility. Speaking to the local media, the manager turned down the rumours for now.

“I know nothing about Newcastle,” Unai Emery replied (via AS).

Emery has been highly praised for his job at Villarreal, and following his quotes, AS comments that neither the manager nor the club are willing to give up on their ‘ambitious project’.

They claim the coach seems to be Newcastle’s ‘impossible dream’, even though the possibility of his move to the Premier League can’t be ruled out due to the money the Magpies should have available.

As the Spanish media knows nothing about this approach, they say it remains to be seen if the club will really go for his signing.
