Mauricio Pochettino will be happy with just how stung Moussa Dembele is by Tottenham’s European exit. One month after Europa League elimination to Gent, Tottenham players are still to overcome the disappointment.
Spurs lost 1-0 in Belgium, and failure to win at White Hart Lane cost them a spot in the tournament’s round-of-16.
Tottenham midfielder Moussa Dembele has been speaking to DH, and was questioned about how the club took the defeat.
“Yes, we talked about it and we thought it was unacceptable,” said the Tottenham favourite.
“But we couldn’t have regrets for too long, we had to focus on this other challenge: keep second place in the league. I’m looking forward to starting this final sprint.”
Gent themselves were knocked-out in the round-of-16 by their compatriots from Genk, loosing 5-3 on aggregate. The loss was especially stinging for Dembele, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, given the coverage in their native Belgium.
With 10 Premier League fixtures to go, Tottenham are currently ten points behind leaders Chelsea and two points ahead of third-placed Manchester City.
Spurs next play on Saturday, against Burnley at Toof Moor. As City will be facing a harder challenge at the Emirates, that will be a good opportunity to increase the gap.
