Needing a right-back to challenge Serge Aurier following Gregory Van Der Wiel’s departure from Paris Saint-Germain, the French club and Unai Emery decided Belgium’s Thomas Meunier was the man for the job.

Bought for just over £5m, the 24-year-old will join up with his new teammates in the French capital following a post-Euros holiday.

When the transfer news broke, the Ligue 1 champions seemed fairly unchallenged in their pursuit of the Standard Liege star, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

According to Voetbal Magazine in Belgium, relayed by VoetbalNieuws, Paris Saint-Germain saw off quite a lot of competition to sign Meunier, including Manchester City.

The Premier League club, probably looking for a new player to take over from the soon-to-leave Pablo Zabaleta, even got Txiki Begiristain involved personally, but to no avail.

Napoli (who were also trailing Sime Vrsjalko), West Ham, Liverpool, Torino and AS Roma were also all keen on the right-back, who scored six goals and provided six assists in 42 appearances last season.
