It’s now official: Islam Slimani won’t be staying at AS Monaco beyond this year.
The Algeria international, who was sent by Leicester City to the principality side to get some first-team football under his belt, will be returning to the King Power Stadium where he and Brendan Rodgers will have to work out what to do next.
Once the club’s record signing, Slimani never managed to have as much impact with the Foxes than he did at Sporting CP, which led to a handful of loans once Claudio Ranieri was relieved of his duties.
The latest to Monaco appeared to be the perfect one, but with changes taking place behind the scenes at the Ligue 1 club, the decision to send him back was taken.
According to La Gazette du Fennec, Slimani appears to have two options that could currently land on his desk.
They state a return to Sporting CP, where he broke onto the European scene, is ‘conceivable’, while Marseille are said to be ‘following his situation closely’, hoping perhaps to pair him up with Dario Benedetto in the same manner Monaco did with Wissam Ben Yedder.
The Algerian website do say ‘the near certainty’ is that the goalscorer is ‘convinced’ he can still play in Europe at the highest level, ruling out, at least for now, talk of a potential move to more exotic destinations.
