As Frederic Guilbert continues to look close to leaving Aston Villa this month, the French media share some news about the race to sign him.

Foot Mercato feature a new story claiming that besides Strasbourg, who had him on loan last season, there’s now a new club in the battle.

That’s Lille, who are ‘also interested’ and stand ‘on the lookout’ to take him from Aston Villa as well.

Foot Mercato don’t say if either of those clubs have the lead for his signing, claiming this is a ‘case to follow’ for now.

Guilbert was loaned by Aston Villa to Strasbourg in January 2021 and stayed there until last summer. After 49 appearances for the French club, he returned to the Villans and didn’t get a single minute for the Premier League side this season.

That may be a good reason for the player to feel attracted to a return to his loan club. However, they’re currently 19th in the Ligue 1 table, while Lille stand in 7th and could certainly offer him a much more certain future in the first division.
