On Friday HITC took a Sun report from August 2016 to link Tottenham with interest in Adrien Silva. There’s nothing much wrong with that, even if the original claims were very hard to believe.
Tottenham were said to be ‘weighing up’ a £13m move for the Sporting captain, which would have almost certainly been laughed out of Lisbon. HITC’s reasoning is that Sporting are now ready to accept less than Adrien’s €45m release clause, something reported in Portugal for several weeks.
The problem comes with O Jogo, and the Portuguese newspaper reporting it all as new Tottenham interest. Unsurprisingly, the £13m amount isn’t mentioned, perhaps so Sporting fans don’t choke on their cornflakes.
Sporting do have a genuine interest in an Adrien sale this summer, they’re looking to raise money from somewhere. But there’s an awful lot of doubts around whether Tottenham interest was genuine last summer, never-mind during the current transfer season.
Tottenham haven’t been scouting Sporting, and there’s no concrete basis to back-up Mauricio Pochettino interest. But, if they are keen, it’s possible.
That’s a pretty big ‘if’, and Sporting, who were so scarred by losing Eric Dier to Spurs for a few million they sign almost any youth player that moves to a €30m+ clause, won’t be offering Tottenham any favours.
O Jogo say the Premier League is regarded as the ideal destination for Adrien, who was keen on a move to Leicester last summer.
