Clinton Njie had a strange summer. That his loan move from Tottenham was set to be made permanent wasn’t exactly a secret, especially after Njie turned up for preseason training at the French club.
Tottenham seemed to have written a clause into the loan, but with no announcement from either club, certainty wasn’t around. And Marseille weren’t exactly happy buyers, after a less than impressive loan period.
Four goals and a single assist in 22 league appearances for Marseille, around half as a substitute, hadn’t wowed fans who had been encouraged by the club to expect big things under the new ownership.
In July, when the permanent move from Tottenham still hadn’t been made official, it was reported in France that Marseille could sell Njie straight on, given he wasn’t a part of the manager’s plans.
Njie thought otherwise, and after working hard in preseason, he’s started the season well. It’s a huge turnaround for a player who was shipped out of Tottenham, having not impressed Mauricio Pochettino, and signed for a club who didn’t really seem keen.
So far this season, Njie has scored 5 goals in four games, a huge turnaround. Man of the Match on Sunday in a 2-0 win for Marseille, the Tottenham flop scored both goals.
L’Equipe, who have detailed much of the player’s woes over the past couple of years, say Njie is ‘The great attacker’ which is a reference to Marseille’s search for a star upfront.
