Last weekend, the English media reported Arsenal’s interest in Porto striker Mehdi Taremi.
It was claimed that following Gabriel Jesus’ injury at the World Cup, the Gunners saw the Dragons’ star as a potential replacement for the Brazilian.
Taremi has 15 goals and nine assists for club and country this season, including his brace against England in his first game in Qatar.
Well, the rumour about Arsenal’s interest soon got to the Portuguese media, and they are being very clear about Porto’s stance on this situation.
According to newspaper O Jogo, ‘the truth is’ that Porto’s wish to sell Taremi in the middle of the season is none.
The outlet claims that the Dragons are actually focused on renewing the player’s contract and guarantee his future at the club. Only in case that’s ‘impossible’, then they’d evaluate other scenarios.
Taremi’s current contract with Porto expires in 2024, so it’s indeed very likely the club would only feel pressured to negotiate him next summer. He’s also protected by a €60m release clause, and that’s likely to be the price tag Arsenal would have to meet to get any transfer done.
