One of the more interesting stories on and around transfer deadline day was the possibility of Salomon Kalou making a return to the Premier League.

West Ham were reportedly interested, and it’s now been revealed by the player himself that Aston Villa made an attempt, via John Terry, to sign the forward.

Currently at Hertha BSC, the 34-year-old hasn’t really managed to convince Jürgen Klinsmann, who probably wouldn’t have missed the former Ivory Coast international’s presence at the club.

Speaking to Berliner Kurier, the player said: “England would have appealed to me very much. I got a call from my good friend John Terry, who is now coaching Aston Villa. I would have loved to play under him.

“We tried until the end if there was a possibility, but I’m not European. I don’t play in the national team anymore. That was the problem”.

While a move to Villa Park or the London Stadium, where David Moyes could have a use for him, is now off the cards because of apparent work permit issues, there are other destinations Kalou can still move to, like the MLS.

Their transfer window opens on February 12th, and it’s somewhere he’d see himself.

He added: “I find the MLS interesting. The league is growing, more and more people in the USA are interested in football. I was never badly injured in my career. I feel fresh and young”.
