On Wednesday afternoon, Basque newspaper Noticias de Gipuzkoa sounded almost despondent about Martin Zubimendi and a potential move to Liverpool.
Whilst the midfielder had held off interest from other clubs in the past, there was a feeling he was edging towards accepting a move to the Reds.
Liverpool were said to be ready to pay his €60m release clause, and Noticias de Gipuzkoa reported there was an ‘atmosphere of resignation’ at Real Sociedad that Zubimendi would be off to Arne Slot’s side.
Now, they sound a little cheerier.
The Spain international has been included in La Real’s squad for their last friendly of the summer, against Union Berlin in Germany.
That appears to have given those around the Basque club some hope, and is seen as a sign that a transfer to Liverpool isn’t nailed on. In addition, Mikel Merino, thought to be of interest to Arsenal, hasn’t been included in the travelling group.
Noticias de Gipuzkoa say ‘what on Wednesday seemed like an almost certain departure, today no longer seems so’, and they’re clearly on a rollercoaster of transfer emotions.
They’ll hope that tomorrow doesn’t see another drop.
