It’s not really deadline day if there’s not a claim Tottenham Hotspur have tried to sign Andre Gomes, and last week The Guardian did the honours.

An approach to Barcelona was said to have been knocked back, with Tottenham apparently wanting the player on loan for the rest of the season.

It’s similar to what has been claimed before, with Spurs either said to be asking for a loan, or Barcelona outright offering it.

Throughout all the links, we’ve regularly pointed out a note of caution: Gomes hasn’t been a good signing for Barcelona, and the reasons for that suggest he’s perhaps not suitable for Tottenham.

Playing for Barca against his former club Valencia last night, Gomes by all accounts had a shocker. Sport gave him 4/10 and have even published a standalone article on how poor Gomes was and how he can’t complain about a lack of chances, because when given an opportunity he usually wastes it.

Gomes has said to have missed another opportunity to ‘prove he has Barca DNA’.

Sport say the 24 year old is ‘a player lacking confidence’, ‘full of doubts on the pitch’, ‘limits himself to doing the easiest thing: pass backwards to a teammate’, ‘shows his inner nervousness’, and has a ‘lack of absolute confidence in his talent’.

Basically, they think he’s a nervous wreck. And, more worryingly for Sport, they say even his teammates are taking other options than passing to Gomes, concerned he’ll hold up an attack.

It’s not a great reference for any Tottenham interest, is it? Regardless, same time next transfer window, the rumours will return again.
