Belgium’s exit to Wales at Euro 2016 was always likely to lead to Marc Wilmots departing the country’s managerial hot-seat. Belgium have a golden generation which many in the country feels has to win an international tournament, or at the very least get very close to it.
Belgium are currently ranked second in the world by FIFA, second only to Argentina, but unlike Lionel Messi and co, Belgium haven’t been tragic losers of finals, because they can’t get near them.
Wilmots exiting the post, means the country are on the lookout for a replacement, and it’s of interest to Tottenham’s Belgian contingent.
HLN quote Jan Vertonghen as saying: “Hopefully comes another coach who can bring a breath of fresh air into the team. It would be good if the new coach can take the positives from Wilmots. He was very good with the group and verbally strong too. I hope the new coach is also very strong with football technically.”
Vertonghen’s club and national teammate Mousa Dembele was also asked, but didn’t sound quite as excited as the defender: “It’s unfortunate. He did a good job for the country.”
Several high profile names have been linked with the Belgium job, including former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.
