Tottenham Hotspur are ‘very interested’ in Lille’s Mike Maignan, reports L’Equipe.
The Frenchman’s potential arrival in north London could give a ‘way out’ for Hugo Lloris in the summer.
Maignan’s current deal lasts until 2022, so there’s building pressure given the lack of an extension. The keeper, who likes the Premier League, has ‘desires elsewhere’, meaning he wants to move to another club.
Lille don’t want to let their player leave for free in 2022. The custodian’s asking price is estimated around €25m, and L’Equipe believe it’s not within reach of most clubs [in the current context], especially for a player who has a year left on his contract.
It’s stated Daniel Levy would provide tough negotiations and it’s explained the Tottenham chairman will ‘try to negotiate the most’ to bring the price down.
In November 2019, both João Sacramento and Nuno Santos left Lille to be part of José Mourinho’s backroom staff at Tottenham.
Sacramento ‘often praises’ Maignan’s qualities and potential, which he ‘considers enormous’. He believes the Frenchman’s contract situation at Lille makes it ‘ideal’ for Spurs to sign him in the summer.
Santos, Tottenham’s goalkeeping coach, is one of Maignan’s ‘staunch supporters’.
Both Sacramento and Santos are encouraging Mourinho to sign the Lille stopper for the north London club.
Spurs, however, will face competition from AC Milan since they are also interested in Maignan as a possible replacement for Gianluigi Donnarumma, if the Italian leaves the San Siro after this season.
