Towards the end of the transfer window, a story appeared suggesting that Tottenham were interested in Alexander Nübel.

The German goalkeeper is currently on loan at AS Monaco from Bayern Munich, as he needs first-team football following his move from Schalke 04 and doesn’t want to sit behind Manuel Neuer.

The latter’s contract with the Bavarians is up in 2023, but at 35 years of age, it remains to be seen if he will stay beyond that time, because if he decides he wants to stay beyond his current deal, then that will be a problem for Nübel.

This is where Tottenham would come in, as Hugo Lloris, despite renewing his contract at Spurs, won’t stay forever.

Kicker have an article on the matter on Monday, explaining that as long as Neuer is under contract, he won’t be giving up any time between the sticks, all the while ‘an extension of his contract beyond 2023 is being discussed’.

For Nübel, this would be a problem as he doesn’t want just cup football after playing in the Champions League and Europa League with Monaco.

As for Neuer, he will ‘never accept’ a compromise where he wouldn’t play in Europe’s top competition, meaning those who make these decisions at Bayern understand that they cannot have the two Germans at the same club at the same time.

Despite this, ‘they would be willing to extend Nübel’s contract’ (his current one ends in 2025), allowing him to stay on loan elsewhere ‘in the Champions League so that he can prove his ability to be the number one’ until his competition at Bayern moves on.

That’s where Kicker also add that ‘among other things, Tottenham are interested’.

Now, if you ask us, that’s there for a reason, especially since there’s a good chance Lloris would likely be a bit more willing to give up some of his game time at Tottenham than Neuer, perhaps with those in charge at Spurs seeing Nübel as the ideal successor for the Frenchman.

We’ll have to wait and see, but it’s a complicated situation, and one that isn’t likely to be resolved anytime soon.
