Tottenham and Andre Gomes repeatedly pops us a rumour without there often seeming a great deal behind it.

The Guardian say a Tottenham approach to sign Gomes on loan from Barcelona has hit the buffers. With the English newspaper saying ‘reportedly’, we checked everywhere in Spain but there doesn’t seem to be anything backing it up.

Gomes has long been seen as a player surplus to requirements at Barcelona and one they’d look to get off the wage bill, but in recent months the reporting has somewhat calmed.

With 404 La Liga minutes this season, Gomes doesn’t seem indispensable, and Tottenham could have likely built some kind of deal if they were keen enough. Barcelona may be easier to convince than the player.

Towards the end of the summer window Gomes was offered ‘almost free’ to Spurs, as long Mauricio Pochettino had an intention to play him, and it seems the links with Tottenham are something of a tradition, stretching back further than that.

This looks to be one that will slide away before popping up again in the summer.
