Mainz are yet to receive any contact from Newcastle, Tottenham or West Ham about midfielder Anton Stach despite all three Premier League clubs being linked with a move.
That’s according to director of sport Christian Heidel, who has labelled the rumours around the midfielder as nothing more than a “whole circus”.
Stach found himself linked with a move to England earlier this week when a report from Sky Sports Germany linked him with several clubs.
That stated that the likes of Dortmund, Gladbach, Leverkusen and Leipzig were all eyeing the midfielder inside the Bundesliga but the interest in him didn’t end there.
According to their information, Newcastle, Tottenham and West Ham were all also in the mix alongside big Italian clubs.
They were all apparently impressed by what they had seen from the 24-year-old, who BILD say is ‘back in top form’ after battling back from injury.
“We haven’t heard anything about the whole circus yet. No one has contacted us yet, so the subject doesn’t arise at the moment!” he told the newspaper.
That would suggest the interest from Newcastle, Tottenham and West Ham is nowhere near as advanced as might have been suggested, despite claims they’re keen because Stach is available on the cheap.
That’s because his current contract runs until 2024, leading to the belief that Mainz will be forced to sell this summer.
It appears that is not entirely true, though, with BILD reporting that the German club have an option to extend his deal by a year and Heidel confirming as much.
“It (the clause) still has time. But I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t pull it,” he added.
“I’ll say what I always say: For Mainz 05, no player is unsellable. In such a case, you have to weigh up the economic aspects against the sporting aspects. It depends on what the player wants. And then you decide.”
