Federico Fazio will not be returning to Tottenham, having completed the 20 games he needed to reach to make his AS Roma transfer permanent.
There was unsurprisingly huge skepticism when Fazio arrived at Roma in the summer. Mauricio Pochettino and Tottenham clearly didn’t want the player, with Daniel Levy working hard to find the best solution.
A previous loan to Sevilla hadn’t gone well at all and Fazio returned to Tottenham where he stood little chance of competing with the likes of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.
Roma eventually showed up, the club’s fans weren’t sure, but paying Tottenham a loan fee of €1.2m, they took the defender. Gazzetta dello Sport report the €3.2m payment due because the deal is now permanent will not be paid during the current window, but only in the summer.
At that stage if they so wished, and they probably don’t, Roma could make a big and quick profit on Fazio, such has been his surprising form since arriving from Tottenham.
A bargain deal from Tottenham? Daniel Levy will be kicking himself.
But, genuinely, Fazio was something of a comical figure in the summer following his Sevilla failure, and he’s done incredibly well to turn his fortunes around so much. The €3.2m can go towards Tottenham’s annual winger purchase.
