Despite all the excitement surrounding Tottenham’s attempts to sign Cristian Romero, it’s worth pointing out that prior to their moves for the Argentine, Spurs wanted Takehiro Tomiyasu.
Offers were made, but they never quite matched what Bologna were asking for, meaning no deal was ever struck between the two parties.
In the meantime, Tomiyasu headed off to Japan to represent his home country at the Olympics, only to suffer an injury to his ankle the day before their opening game, forcing him to watch from the stands.
He’s since recovered and played in his side’s 4-0 dismantling of France, which was avidly watched by Tottenham and Atalanta.
That’s according to Il Resto del Carlino, who explain that clubs interested in the player were ‘at the window awaiting news of his health’, which includes Spurs, who have ‘turned up again’.
We’ll have to see if anything comes of this, because there is no denying the need in London of a right-back, and the fact Tomiyasu can also play through the middle is of great help as well.
Perhaps Spurs are just waiting for him to return from the Olympics, but their priority right now is clearly Cristian Romero.
It’s just worth also remembering they haven’t forgotten about Tomiyasu.
