Tottenham Hotspur may be regretting their decision not to move for striker Gift Orban in the summer, as he is currently ‘better than Erling Haaland’.
That’s at least according to Het Nieuwsblad, who cover the player today and how he is currently bettering the Manchester City star in one goalscoring metric.
The newspaper explain that Orban ‘is a phenomenon’ after he bagged the latest hattrick of his career in the 3-1 win over Breidablik.
That meant he took the match ball home for the fifth time in eight months, bettering Erling Haaland and ‘even doing better’ than Ronaldo and Messi at the same age.
He’s scored three goals in more in one match five times in 2023, four hattricks and four goals in another, and that makes him ‘better than Erling Haaland’ who has scored three goals or more in the same match four times.
Thursday evening saw Orban bag another hattrick, his second of the season after another in the 5-0 win over Pogon Stettin in the third qualifying round of the Conference League.
Defining a hattrick as three goals even puts him above Ronaldo and Messi, with the latter only 23 when he got his first and Messi only managing two before his 22nd birthday. So Orban is ‘doing better’ than them as well.
It’s big praise for the youngster, who Tottenham may now regret turning down after looking at him in the summer transfer window.
Several reports have made it clear that Orban was liked their by their scouts but his €30m valuation was considered too risky, even if Tottenham had the money from Harry Kane’s move to Bayern.
The gamble was apparently too big but if he continues to score goals as he has, and compare favourably to some of the biggest names, that won’t be the case for too long.
