On Monday evening, the Independent put forward a story claiming that Barcelona were monitoring the Toby Alderweireld debacle at Tottenham, with the Belgian defender yet to sign a new contract with the London club.

This has since been picked up by Mundo Deportivo who, in their Wednesday edition, go out of their way to confirm the English media outlet’s story, explaining the La Liga leaders have ‘moved to find out what his situation is and learn under which circumstances a transfer could be done’.

Relaying the rest of the article, with Manchester United also said to be keeping a close eye on the Tottenham centre-back, the Catalan newspaper also add their own information.

According to them, Barcelona would only make a serious move for Alderweireld if Yerry Mina, who arrived at the club in January, failed to adapt and wasn’t seen as a solution for the future.

If the young Colombian, come the end of the season, was seen as requiring more game time elsewhere to gain experience, that’s when the Tottenham star would be considered.

At 23, he was always seen as a ‘strategic purchase’, but he remains the ‘first option’ for the club going forward until they decide otherwise.

So, as we see it, Tottenham fans should show their support for Yerry Mina and hope he prevails in Barcelona.
