Tottenham Hotspur are one of the clubs in the picture to sign Lille’s Jonathan David this summer, according to L’Equipe.
The striker has starred for the Ligue 1 side since joining them in 2018, and managed 26 goals and nine assists from 47 games across all competitions last season.
David has less than a year left on his deal, and this ‘leaves the door open’ for him to leave the French club in this window.
When discussing interested parties, the report names Tottenham and Atlético Madrid, and it’s claimed these two teams are ‘still interested’. AS Roma showed interest, but he has turned them down.
At this moment in time, the only certainty is that the Canada international won’t sign an extension. In other words, this window will be the French club’s last big chance to earn a fee from his sale.
Amid interest from Tottenham and Atlético, and David’s contract situation, Lille president Olivier Létang claims there’s no need for his side to sell the player who could feature in the Champions League qualifier against Fenerbahçe later today.
“Everything is possible. A little less than a month remains. He’s focused on our two European matches which are coming up with the objective of qualifying for the Champions League,” he told L’Equipe.
“Lille don’t need to sell. The club have regained sound management. It allows us to approach particular situations calmly. The Champions League is not vital for us, fortunately. One thing is certain: there will be no departure if we do not have the capacity to replace him.”
