Mauricio Pochettino may well choose not to pick Toby Alderweireld tonight against Gent, preferring instead to rest the defender. However, if that’s the case, then there’s going to be 20 disappointed fans at the match.

Alderweireld’s family and friends are taking the opportunity to watch the Tottenham player in action, and they’d of course rather he was on the pitch. The Belgian international spoke recently about missing his family and not seeing them enough, and that could be partly behind the big outing to Ghent.

Het Belang van Limburg have been speaking to Alderweireld’s mother and brother ahead of the match, with Marina Alderweireld calling the opportunity to watch her son in Belgium ‘something special’.

Steve Alderweireld knew the family had to attend as soon as the draw as made: “Immediately after the draw I sent a text message to Toby and asked him to arrange some tickets for the match in Ghent. Because of my job and our three kids it’s Screen Shot 2017-02-16 at 10.26.38not easy for me to go to London often, so this was a great opportunity to see him work. We will be with the family and friends, making a total of 20 additional Spurs fans in the Ghelamco Arena.”

Alderweireld’s mum shared some more on the defender’s plans for the season, and it’s clear the Belgian’s family are wrapped up in the club’s ambitions: “Tottenham and Toby obviously hope to win the Premier League title and they are still active in the FA Cup. For next season, however, the Champions League is again the great goal and that is exactly the main prize if you win the final of the Europa League. But first is the clash tonight in Ghent, we hope, as always, on a clean sheet, then Toby is satisfied. But I still expect Tottenham to win 0-2.”
