Tottenham’s Erik Lamela will be hoping for a slightly different international break to his last one. As Argentina were looking for a replacement for the injured Lionel Messi, newspaper Ole had decided Lamela was to be that man.

When that didn’t work, and Argentina only managed a 2-2 draw with Venezuela, Ole stuck the boot in and slated Lamela’s performance. The Tottenham star was handed a measly 4 out of ten and Ole columnist Hernan Claus said “not even his assist saved him from a bad performance.

“Erik played in almost the same role as at Tottenham, where every weekend he has highlights of skills and passes for goals. But this time he could never impose one on one and most of his attacks ended in inconsequential touches.”

Being hyped up to replace Messi in a match is never likely to go swimmingly, and poor Lamela quickly found that out.

There’s no Messi again this time, and Lamela may want to keep the hype around himself quieter, not that he has much power in that regard. Tottenham’s win over Manchester City means Spurs, Poch and Coco are big news.

Argentina’s Ambito report that Lamela skipped the country’s first training session, having played against Manchester City, and will instead ease slowly into the current international break.
