Tottenham star Micky van de Ven has again credited Netherlands assistant manager Wim Jonk with giving him the career he’s having.

Soccer News cover comments from the Tottenham defender today in which he admits his life would have taken a very different course if it had not been for Jonk’s intervention.

Van de Ven has often credited Jonk with his rise in recent years, with the current Netherlands assistant manager the one who first gave him his chance at Volendam when he was just 18 years old.

The defender hadn’t been seen as a future star at that point, but Jonk saw something in him, and the rest is now history.

He’s since established himself as a star at Wolfsburg before joining Tottenham in a €40m deal in August 2023 and establishing himself as a key player there, when injuries have allowed him to.

This week also saw him further establish himself on the international stage as he bagged a goal and an assist in 8-0 win over Malta.

The Tottenham man was asked about Jonk in post-match comments and admitted, life would be very different for him had the Netherlands assistant not been a part of his career early on.

“He has been very important in my career,” he said.

“He introduced me to professional football. Without him, I probably would not have become a professional footballer. What would I have done then? I think personal trainer or something else in sports.”
