When clubs like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, PSG, Barcelona and the Manchester pair get involved in a transfer chase then it’s usually time for Tottenham Hotspur to take a seat.

That’s meant as no disrespect to the Premier League club, but when finances reach those high levels, and the associated wages also rise, it’s unlikely that Spurs would be able to compete or even want to.

Despite all of that, and despite all those clubs being named, Tottenham continue to be listed as one of the clubs seriously interested in signing Frenkie de Jong from Ajax.

Spurs are described as one of the clubs who have ‘already shown their interest’ in signing the player. Several times in the Spanish media it’s been explained that Tottenham hold an advantage in the race for De Jong, and his club and national teammate Matthijs de Ligt, because of their record of signing players from Ajax.

Davinson Sanchez is the latest, but Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen have also made the move, whilst Toby Alderweireld played there before he signed for Atletico Madrid.

That could help De Jong settle in and the lines of communication between the two clubs are well used, but it’s not going to do anything for the transfer fee.

If Tottenham were somehow able to pull it off, it would be a hugely impressive signing.
