There’s few things the Catalan sport media love more than linking a list of Premier League clubs with a Barcelona player… before then explaining why it’s tough luck and they can’t have him.
It often feels like the interest is fabricated in order to fluff feathers at Barcelona, and that’s seemed the case with Sergi Roberto. Tottenham have now been dragged into the latest chase, and whilst some of the claims could be true, it’s doubtful all of them, about several Premier League clubs, are.
Mundo Deportivo say Tottenham Hotspur showed up with interest in Roberto on Tuesday.
There’s been doubt growing over the player’s future at Barcelona and the arrival of former Tottenham player Paulinho and planned arrival of Philippe Coutinho could restrict Roberto’s midfield chances further.
This was supposed to be a big season for the 25 year old, explain Mundo Deportivo, after he played in almost 50 games last season. It will be difficult to replicate, yet Barcelona have made it very clear the versatile player is going nowhere.
Roberto sees himself as a midfielder, but has been deployed at right back when needed by Barcelona.
Despite the message to Tottenham being that they’ve got no chance, it’s likely Mauricio Pochettino would have only been able to offer a similar role at Spurs, rather than a nailed on midfield starting place.
