Over the weekend, the English media reported Tottenham Hotspur interest in Corinthians youngster Rodrigo Varanda.
It was claimed that Spurs would be willing to pay €8.5m for his signing, and since the striker’s contract expires in January, the Brazilian side would be under pressure to make the sale.
Well, that turned out to be big news for the local São Paulo press, and many outlets went after more information in the past couple of days.
TNT Sports was one of the first to get to the news. They confirmed with people close to the player that there are approaches for his transfer, although there were no details of the numbers involved. Corinthians director Roberto de Andrade, however, denied any information about this move.
Meanwhile, ESPN Brasil found out something similar, with their sources also confirming there’s an approach from Tottenham. They also heard that there are ‘few details’ between the player and renewing his deal with the Brazilian side.
Another two reports are also a little pessimistic about the chances of a transfer to Spurs. While Meu Timão heard from people close to the player that they know nothing about the London side, Gazeta Esportiva learned that Corinthians are ‘very optimistic’ about his renewal.
With so many reports pointing to the direction of a new contract, it doesn’t really seem like Tottenham are that close to signing the 18-year-old, or at least not so soon. We can only wait and see how far this story goes.
