Austria legend Toni Polster has questioned why Marcel Sabitzer would move to Tottenham this summer.
The midfielder has been impressing for RB Leipzig this season, managing 15 goals and eight assists for Leipzig this season.
He recently starred in their win over Tottenham in the Champions League and was subsequently heavily linked with a move to the club.
They reported that José Mourinho was keen on the 25-year-old, with the Portuguese boss planning an overhaul of Spurs’ squad this summer.
Polster, though, believes Sabitzer would only make the move to Tottenham for the money as there’s no other reason to do so.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if Mourinho is really interested in Sabitzer,” he wrote in his column for Sport 24.
“He has developed magnificently and has recently drawn attention to himself in a direct duel.
“At the moment, a change to Tottenham would probably only be a financial step forward.
“Leipzig is in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and is still competing for the title in Germany. But: Mourinho is tinkering with a team for the long-term future.
“Spurs could easily afford the 50 million Euros for Sabitzer. However, Corona has put everything on hold for the moment.
“One has to wait and see how much the crisis will affect the top clubs.”
While Polster may be right in his assertion that Leipzig are a more attractive proposition than Tottenham at present, he seems to have overlooked a few key details.
Chief among them is the lure of playing in the Premier League, with plenty of players keen to test themselves in the league and moving because of it.
There’s also Mourinho to consider. His star may be fading of late, but he remains a manager players are keen to play for regardless of that.
Those are two extra factors in a whole list that could convince him to move to Tottenham, meaning money would not be the only reason.
