With the prospect of losing Kalidou Koulibaly this summer to a big offer from either the Premier League or Paris Saint-Germain, Napoli are looking at centre-backs.
The ideal scenario would be to bring in someone young, with names such as Malang Sarr or Benoît Badiashile being considered, but in case those don’t come to fruition, there is a plan B, who is Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen, according to Corriere dello Sport.
It’s stated the Spurs man remains a ‘temptation’ as his transfer would be ‘immediate and with few technical risks’, since he’s an experienced player with a contract expiring at the end of the season.
Corriere explain ‘chats’ already took place in January with ‘those that surround him’ and to restart them would now be ‘easier’.
However, they do point out he doesn’t reflect the philosophy the club are aiming towards, but the Spurs centre-back would also offer some versatility, since he can, if really needed, play at left-back.
Furthermore, one of his good friends, Dries Mertens, is already at the club, who could help ‘guide’ him and settle.
They feel this all ‘may be enough’ and even if Vertonghen were to be signed, there’s still room for Napoli to sign a younger defender to place ‘behind him’ for development purposes.
