On Sunday, Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny gave an interview to Canal+ in France, where he opened up about watching France win the World Cup from a distance.
Expected to be in Didier Deschamps’ squad, the centre-back suffered a season ending Achilles injury in the Europa League semi-final against Atlético Madrid in May, which he’s yet to fully recover from.
During the interview, Koscielny admitted part of him wanted France to lose the World Cup, because he wasn’t there with them when he should have been, and he was hurt that a lot of people who he thought were close to him seemed to ‘forget’ about him during his injury.
The Arsenal defender was also very emotional when talking about his ’selfishness’, where he put a lot of people to one side, including his family, to focus on his rehabilitation.
He said, relayed by RMC Sport: “I don’t have all the facts in front of me regarding the calls and the messages. What is certain is that we thought a lot about him during the competition.
“He was a very important person in the team. What he said yesterday, it’s painful to see him in that situation. He suffered, but he’s going to give himself some new challenges.”
