After Denmark lost both of their World Cup Qualifiers, to Poland and Montenegro, in October, Christian Eriksen said his country would likely have to win all seven of their remaining qualifiers to get to Russia.

The Tottenham player backed his aims up in November, with 2 goals in a 4-1 win over Kazakhstan. That gave some confidence and just like before many Danish matches, the past week has seen the country’s media hyping up Eriksen and therefore Denmark’s chances.

However, once again their hopes have come crashing down. A 0-0 draw with Romania sees Denmark 6 points off automatic qualification.

Eriksen is in the spotlight and the Tottenham player has spoken of his disappointment. Quoted by Ekstra Bladet, Eriksen said: “I think actually my own match was ok. I should probably have put one or two in, so I owe one. But in general I think we played an ok match.

“When we started the group, we’d have probably said yes to a point in Romania but with the matches we lost, we had hoped for three points.

“It is the disappointment that prevails most now. We had chances to win, but we did not really utilise them. They had the first two chances, but from there it was us who sat on top in the game.”

Eriksen won’t get a chance to make things right until June, when Denmark face Kazakhstan at home.
