There are five Premier League players in L’Equipe’s Team of the World Cup, and whilst four of those may have been expected before the tournament, Kieran Tripper probably wasn’t.
Paul Pogba, Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Thibaut Courtois all get themselves a place in the selection, along with Trippier.
The right back excelled for Gareth Soutgate’s side playing as a wing back, and will be taking home some wonderful memories.
When Tripper scored for England against Croatia in the World Cup semi-final it felt like everything was coming together for England. Southgate’s men were on top and, thanks to Trippier, they had something to show for it.
Unfortunately it didn’t end up as hoped for, but Trippier’s performances throughout the tournament have been recognised by L’Equipe, who have given him an average rating of 6.14 a match.
That may sound low, but this is L’Equipe and their ratings are always harsh. After France beat Croatia to win the World Cup, the average rating for the winning team was just 5.6 a player.
