Christian Eriksen is a model for Danish football progression. Moving to Ajax as a youngster, Eriksen progressed brilliantly before being snapped up by Tottenham Hotspur.
There may be grumbles at times in Denmark about his national team form, and Eriksen hasn’t been quite as scintillating this season for Tottenham, but the 24 year old has certainly done well in his career to date.
With Kasper Dolbjerg the latest Danish wonderkid, and also at Ajax, comparisons to Eriksen will be made and targets set.
Former Danish footballer John Steen Olsen has been working as an Ajax scout in Scandinavia since the 1990s, so is pretty well placed to judge.
He’s worried that Dolbjerg’s hype could grow too big, and instead of ending up at a ‘great’ club like Eriksen has at Tottenham, he could follow a lesser path and sign for someone like Middlesbrough.
Middlesbrough’s Viktor Fischer is held as an example of the hype not quite being met.
Speaking to Ajax magazine 1900, via Voetbal Nieuws, Olsen said: “Christian Eriksen is now playing at a great Premier League club, but for Viktor Fischer and Lucas Andersen it’s different. Therefore, I am careful with Kasper Dolberg.”
Andersen is currently playing for Swiss club Grasshopper, so it’s not so bad for Fischer. To be fair to the Middlesbrough player, he has suffered from injuries, and playing for a Premier League side is a good level… he’d just like to have played more this season.
