Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in signing Luis Díaz in the winter market convinced Liverpool to step up their efforts and beat the north London club to the 25-year-old’s signature.
The Reds secured the winger’s services from FC Porto and the player made his debut for the Merseyside club in their 3-1 win over Cardiff City in the FA Cup.
Díaz is one of the players Spurs failed to sign in January and months before Liverpool sealed his transfer, reports in the Portuguese press insisted the wideman was looking to join a top club.
A move to Anfield helped the Colombia international move to a big club and that’s the view shared by his father, Luis Manuel Díaz.
“There were many suitors who wanted Luis’ services, but he had the dream of reaching Liverpool. Because Liverpool are an elite team,” Díaz Sr told Blu Radio’s Blog Deportivo, relayed by Marca Claro.
The father of Jürgen Klopp’s new man also revealed that apart from Tottenham, AS Roma tried to make an attempt in landing the South American.
“Tottenham was one. Roma was also left behind in the process. They hesitated a lot and let themselves be caught by Liverpool. Liverpool were faster than them, they needed him and they took him away,” he explained.
Luis Manuel Díaz’s comments make it clear his son’s only preference was to join Liverpool and didn’t consider Tottenham and Roma as possible options.
