Pape Matar Sarr’s season at Tottenham Hotspur has been a reason for some pride in his home country.
Senegalese outlet Wiw Sport today features a story about his good form with Spurs, first highlighting how good he’s been and then speaking to his father about it.
The outlet points out that despite some difficulty last season, Sarr ‘established himself’ under Ange Postecoglou and is now an ‘undisputed starter’ at Tottenham.
His father, Sidath Sarr, explained that the player has had some support from his family to help him succeed at Spurs.
“I encourage him and congratulate him, while continuing to pray for him, because it wasn’t easy when he left Metz for Tottenham. As a parent and former sportsman, I give him advice, and now we can see the season he is having. It’s possible that the patience he showed last year helped put him where he is today. What’s more, he has the trust of his new coach.”
“I tell myself that Pape hasn’t yet shown his true worth; he still has a lot of room for improvement, and God has put him on the right track. So my advice to him is not to be in too much of a hurry. Football is difficult, and fortunately he hasn’t jumped the gun. He went through the youth teams and then the Senegal first team. All we ask is that he doesn’t get ahead of himself.”
Tottenham signed Sarr in a €17m deal from FC Metz back in 2021. At the time, Spurs agreed to leave him on loan at the French side for one more year.
Having joined the Premier League side in the summer of 2022, the midfielder struggled to have playing time at the club, and finished the season with just 14 appearances, and only 212 minutes in the Premier League.
A lot changed since Ange Postecoglou’s arrival, though, as he has 23 appearances in 2023/24, with 1379 minutes on the pitch already.
