Tottenham Hotspur were successful in beating competition from Manchester United in signing Sergio Reguilón from Real Madrid in the last window.

The La Liga winners wanted to include a buyback clause as part of the agreement and Spurs agreed to it, which saw them edge out the Red Devils in signing the fullback.

He has been the first choice left-back for José Mourinho and has featured regularly in the league this season, making 11 appearances.

The Spain international admitted his early adaptation in England has been made more difficult due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“It has also been difficult because of the COVID issue, not being able to have the family close to help me with things. I’m adapting little by little to the weather and especially to the food here, which is a little different,” he told AS.

“I can’t quite get a taste of English food. They always send me my hams and my things from Spain, the other day they sent me a box of fabada [rich Spanish bean stew] so [you can] imagine.”

Reguilón had an opportunity to play in the Champions League this season, but he ended up opting for the north London club, who started the season in the Europa League.

When asked what convinced him to pick Spurs, the player explained: “There are many factors. I could not say one in particular because it is an accumulation of things.

“The perspective of playing for me was very important, because at my age I have to grow and add minutes.

“I have always said that sometime in my life, I wanted to play in the Premier and I had also said that I wanted Mourinho to coach me in my career. Many factors were brought together to make this possible.”

On the former Chelsea manager’s role in convincing him to join Tottenham, Reguilón said: “He called me several times before the decision. It was a reason to take into account, his insistence, because if he loved me so much, it would be for something.”

Tottenham’s last trophy came when they defeated Chelsea to win the EFL Cup in 2008, and it has been their only piece of silverware this millennium. Mourinho, on the other hand, has won trophies at every club he has managed.

Reguilón admitted the Portuguese tactician’s presence gives him confidence of winning a trophy for Spurs.

“I saw, I don’t know where, that in his second year Mourinho has won a title in all the teams he has been in,” the defender stressed.

“I personally look at him, I see that confidence he has in himself and I say, ‘We are going to win something…’ We are going to have to win something. With that mentality things are done.”
