Just before the close of the summer transfer window, Tottenham were linked with Andre Gomes by English reports.
Those reports made their way to Spain, and with the Catalan press looking for a home for Gomes for weeks, maybe months, were welcomed and expanded upon. Despite that, there never seemed anything really concrete about it.
Once the window closed, Gomes to Tottenham was repeatedly mentioned again in Spain, as it was explained Barcelona had failed to get rid of fringe players they didn’t really need.
Spanish newspaper Marca, of the Real Madrid leaning variety, even claimed Gomes had been offered to Tottenham ‘almost free’, which was likely an exaggeration used to make Barca’s exit failures look as bad as possible.
It’s The Sun with the latest claims, stating Tottenham could sign Gomes in January, and again it doesn’t feel particularly concrete. Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo have picked up on it, and, unsurprisingly, don’t rule the chance out.
Gomes has picked up 13 minutes of La Liga football so far this season, and 7 minutes in the Champions League.
The outline idea of Gomes moving to Tottenham would be to gain prominence ahead of the World Cup, but there’s certainly no guarantee he’d get that under Mauricio Pochettino.
